Fundraising by Elgin Parent Council

The Elgin Street Parent Council engages in fundraising to help support arts programming, literacy, technology, and sports-related activities. To learn more about the arts program and the technology committee, please click on the links or find them in the navigation menu.

Our major fundraising event is the annual Book Fair and Silent Auction held in mid-June. The book fair and silent auction begins on the Thursday and runs until Sunday afternoon. We are always looking for more volunteers to assist us with this very successful event. More details about the event can be found on the Book Fair and Silent Auction page.

We also fundraise through movie nights that are held approximately six times throughout the school year. We also host the One Stop Shop Event in mid-November. Tickets are available for $5 and the gym is set up with a variety of vendors, perfect for holiday shopping.

Over the past few years, the parent council has focused their fundraising efforts on improving technology in the classrooms, namely equipping each classroom with a projector. We are also working to improve French language resources and create an intramurals program.

The parent council was also instrumental in launching and continues to support the swimming program offered to students in grades one through six (lessons are held at the Jack Purcell pool adjacent to the school). We have also received grant money to help cover the costs of the program through the generous support of the Community Foundation of Ottawa.

Our fundraising efforts have also supported the students and staff by contributing where possible to the enhancement of the schoolyard. In 2010, the parent council initiated the Jack Purcell Park Re-Development Project that fundraised approximately $130,000 to replace outdated and inadequate playground equipment. The money raised allowed for the creation of an accessible play structure for children, the resurfacing of the ground to improve health, safety and accessibility, and the rehabilitation of the park through tree planting. The new playground was installed in summer 2011. Soccer pitches were also added in 2013.
